HOUSTON (BP)--Houston Baptist University broke away from a 10-point halftime lead and raced past Schreiner University 106-68 at Sharp Gym on Thursday night. HBU led 47-37 at the break, but came out on fire and went on a 21-9 spurt to start the second half, and cruised to the easy win.

Schreiner came out strong early on, using eight points from Clint Lott to take a 14-7 lead just six minutes into the game. HBU would fight back however, and used an eight-point outburst from Michael LeBlanc off the bench during a 23-13 march that gave the Huskies a 30-27 lead with 6:16 to go in the half.

HBU then would pour on the press, forcing the Mountaineers into three consecutive turnovers that resulted in baskets and pushing the lead to 38-30. After a SU bucket, Mike Smith scored six straight points to give HBU a 45-34 margin, and the Huskies went into the break with a 47-37 lead.

The two teams traded baskets for the first four minutes of the second half, before HBU went on its game-deciding tear. Bryce Burch hit two shots during a 9-0 run that gave the Huskies a 21-point cushion, 65-44 with 14:21 to go.

HBU would then continue to extend the lead with good offense and defense. Offensively, LeBlanc went for 14 points in a six-minute span to give the Huskies a 99-65 lead with three minutes left. The Huskies put the clamps on Schreiner down the stretch, holding the Mountaineers to just nine points over the final 7:25 of the game.

Houston Baptist shot 56 percent from the floor and forced 34 turnovers from Schreiner, which shot just 38 percent for the night. The Huskies were led by five players in double-figures. LeBlanc finished with a season-high 22 points in just 18 minutes of action, while Charles
Fordjour had his second double-double of the season with 20 points and a game-high 10 caroms. Michael Holmquist had 12 points, and Mike Smith and Kendrick Bridges each netted 11. Smith added five assists and a career-high seven steals.

Chris Borak paced the losing effort for Schreiner with 15 points. Nick
Valenta had 11 and Clint Lott and Jarel Hall had 10 apiece. The Huskies held Lott, who scored 23 points on the Huskies in the previous meeting this season, to just 4-16 shooting.

The Huskies, which remained at No. 16 in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll released on Tuesday afternoon, improved to 9-3 on the season with their 32nd straight win in Sharp Gym. Schreiner falls to 1-6 on the season.
