CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (BP)--Still competing at a numerical disadvantage the Campbellsville University's men's and women's cross country teams continue to step up and improve as evidenced by their recent performance in the Midway Cross Country Open held at Woodford County Park in Versailles, Kentucky. Improvement and productive performances were recognized as the men's team finished second overall at the Midway Open while men's runner Jason Hayes and women's runner were honored as the Mid-South Conference "Cross Country Runners-of-the-Week."

The men's team surprised everybody at the Midway Open with their fantastic second place finish. They defeated two teams, Spalding University and I.U.-Southeast, that had beaten them at the Bellarmine and Hanover meets. Hayes finished 2nd among 93 male competitors and improved his time from the previous by 24 seconds over the 8,000 meter course. Hayes finished in 26:58. Patrick Baldwin finished 15th with a time of 28:55. Another notable performance was put in by sophomore runner Joseph Hurtgen who improved his time from the same course last year by 2:15. Hurtgen finished the meet 23rd with a time of 29:24.

The Lady Tiger harriers garnered an 8th place finish in the Midway Open with all runners continuing to improve their performance. Madsen finished 12th out of 85 female runners. She covered the 5,00 meter course in 20:17. Madsen's performance was 48 seconds better than last year's time on the same course. Susan Weeldon was the second Lady Tiger to cross the finish line completing the course in 22:38, a remarkable 1:25 better than last year's performance on the same course. Mary England's 25:00 is her personal best.

Once again, Coach Bill Moore and his team are exited about individual and team improvement but they are not satisfied. The Tiger's next scheduled meet is the Lindsey Wilson Cross Country Meet at Columbia, Kentucky on October 21, 2000. That meet will be followed by the Southeast Classic at Berry College located in Mount Berry, Georgia on October 28,2000 and then the Mid-South Conference Cross Country Meet which will be run at Berea College in Berea Kentucky on November 3-4 this year.

Campbellsville University, located in Central Kentucky and founded in 1906, is a charter member of the Mid-South Conference, an all-sports conference consisting of 10 private colleges and universities in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Mississippi. Campbellsville host 15 intercollegiate athletic teams that are affiliated with the NAIA. The university has an enrollment of 1,600 students. Dr. Michael Carter is president. Jim Deaton is athletic director.
