ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (BP)--The No. 2 Valdosta State Blazers scored touchdowns on their first five possessions on their way to a 42-21 victory over the Ouachita Tigers Oct. 4 in Gulf South Conference football action at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium in Valdosta, Ga. The victory was Valdosta’s 32nd straight in the regular season, including 25 in a row in GSC play.

Quarterback Barrett Wilkes threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns for the Blazers (5-0, 3-0 GSC), as he and backups Buster Faulkner and Jeff Creveling completed passes to 14 different receivers. Raymond Thomas led Valdosta with seven receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown. The Blazers converted 10 of 13 third downs, with all three misses in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers (2-2, 1-2) received the kickoff and had to punt from their own 33 yard line after one first down, and Blazer quarterback Barrett Wilkes directed the Valdosta offense 59 yards in eight plays, finishing the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Jordan with 9:05 left in the first quarter. The Blazers forced another Ouachita punt, and Tyran Robinson finished an 11-play, 62-yard drive with a one-yard carry, putting the Blazers ahead 14-0.

Ouachita followed that score with one of their own, marching 80 yards in nine plays. Sophomore running back Josh Holcomb carried it in from a yard out for the score. It was his sixth carry on the drive, as he gained 48 of the 80 yards, including a 35-yard carry to the Valdosta five yard line to set up the score.

The Blazers answered quickly again, as Wilkes capped off a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive with a 45-yard touchdown to Greg Lofton on third and 20. After a 72-yard punt by Tiger junior Justin Laird, Wilkes went long again, finding Thomas for a 54-yard score to put the Blazers up 28-7 with 5:52 left in the half. It ended an 80-yard, seven-play drive.

Ouachita started the ensuing drive at its own 34-yard line, and the Tigers moved the ball to the 14-yard line. The Tigers ran out of time to try another play. Jack Byrd's 31-yard field goal was blocked by Andre Zellner and the Blazers went into the halftime break ahead 28-7.

Wilkes kept the momentum going as he began the second half, leading Valdosta to another 59-yard touchdown drive. On the drive's seventh play, Wilkes found Jordan for another touchdown, this time from 14 yards out.

The Tigers nearly scored on the ensuing possession, as sophomore quarterback Chris Lammers was stopped inches short of the goal line twice, as a 15-play, 79-yard drive that took 7:26 off the clock resulted in no points. Valdosta could not earn a first down on the drive, and they punted it back to Ouachita.

The Tigers were forced to punt with 10:47 left, but Blazer punt returner Bama Adams muffed the punt, and Ouachita cornerback Steven Lowe recovered the fumble at the Valdosta 19. The Stuttgart, Ark., connection scored its third touchdown in two games for Ouachita, as Lammers found former high school teammate Slade Camp for an 18-yard touchdown to cut the Blazer lead to 35-14 with 9:54 left in the game.

The Blazers tacked on their final score with 5:11 left in the game, as Latray Walker capped off an 11-play, 69-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers posted the game's final score when sophomore linebacker Adam Federle intercepted a Jeff Creveling pass and returned it 28 yards to the Valdosta 15, and Holcomb added his second touchdown of the game on the next play with a 15-yard carry with 1:22 left in the game, cutting the Blazer lead to 42-21.

Tiger senior Montoya Brown, the GSC’s leading rusher, was held to just 40 yards on 13 carries today, snapping a streak of five straight 100-yard games. Holcomb rushed 11 times for 83 yards, including the two scores. Lammers completed 15 of his 21 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Senior Jett Furneaux caught five passes for 66 yards, while Donte Waldon added four catches for 21 yards. Slade Camp had two receptions for 27 yards and a touchdown.

Junior cornerback Chris Porter led the Tigers with nine tackles, and he added a pass breakup as well. Federle had eight tackles, one for a loss, and had a pass breakup to go with his interception. Senior weak safety B.J. Rider had eight tackles as well for the Tigers.

Marlin Adams led the Blazer defense with seven tackles, while Jason Cost and Scott Foss had six each. Elliott Burkes had an interception.

The Tigers will play their third straight ranked opponent, and their second straight game outside Arkansas, as they visit the 5-0, No. 13 North Alabama Lions Oct. 11.
